Microsoft claims breakthrough in real-time translation

WASHINGTON: Microsoft has announced what it called a breakthrough in real-time voice translation and said it would offer a test version through its Skype messaging unit before the end of 2014.

The US tech giant demonstrated the new Skype Translator at the Code Conference, saying it fulfills a vision of the "universal translator" in the Star Trek science fiction series.

SAN FRANCISCO: Apple on Monday unveiled new operating software it hopes will create a seamless experience for users flitting between its coveted mobile devices and popular Macintosh computers.

A next generation operating system called "Yosemite" and new iOS 8 software for iPads, iPhones and iPod devices were unveiled before 6,000 developers at a sold-out conference here.

SAN FRANCISCO: Samsung on Tuesday unwrapped its new smartphone using the Tizen platform, a move aimed at breaking away from Google's Android and staking a claim to the "Internet of Things."
